Frames ⇄ animated PNG

# APNG maker

Build an animated PNG from a set of frames, with full transparency and its own timing for every frame. Or take an APNG apart into separate PNG frames.

Built in this tab. Nothing is uploaded.

## How to make an animated PNG

1. Add your frames in order. Use the arrows to reorder them and the cross to drop one.
2. Set a delay for all frames, then adjust single frames, for example a longer pause on the last one.
3. Choose how often it loops, then build. The preview plays the real file, and its size is shown before you download.

APNG works like GIF but keeps full 24-bit colour and smooth 8-bit transparency, so soft shadows and anti-aliased edges look right on any background. Every current browser plays it; programs that do not know APNG show the first frame as a normal PNG.

When all frames together use 256 colours or fewer, a shared palette is used and the file stays lossless. To make a big animation smaller, cut the frame size or the frame count; photographic animations are usually better as video.

### Splitting an APNG

APNG frames are often stored as small patches that are drawn over the previous frame. The splitter replays the animation exactly as a browser would, applying each frame's dispose and blend operations, and saves every full frame as its own PNG. A timing.txt file in the ZIP lists the delay of each frame and the loop count.

To check an APNG's frame chunks, sequence numbers and timing in detail, open it in the [PNG chunk inspector](https://pngmender.me/png-chunk-inspector/).

## Questions

**Do APNG files play everywhere?**

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari play APNG in image tags and CSS. Many chat apps and some image editors show only the first frame, because they treat the file as a plain PNG.

**Why is my APNG bigger than a GIF?**

GIF is limited to 256 colours and on-or-off transparency, so it throws detail away. An APNG with smooth gradients or soft transparency stores all of it. Turn on “Store only what changes” and keep the frame size modest.

**What is the shortest frame delay?**

The file can store delays down to 1 ms, but browsers clamp very short delays (often anything under 10–20 ms) to a longer value. For smooth motion, 33–50 ms (20–30 frames per second) is plenty.

**Can I convert a GIF to APNG?**

Not directly: a dropped GIF is decoded by the browser as its first frame only. Export the GIF's frames first, then add them here in order.

**Are my frames uploaded?**

No. Frames are decoded, encoded and zipped in a background worker in this browser tab.
